The man known as the “father of tourism” in Ethiopia for his creative and long lasting contribution to the establishment and development of Ethiopian tourism commission (ETC) and Ethiopian tourism, the honorable Ato Habteselassie, died today at the age of 90.
Ato Habteselassie is the man who coined the famous Ethiopian tourism logo “13 months of sunshine”. He served his country as a tourist guide and rose through the ranks to be the tourism commissioner of ETC (Ethiopian Tourism Commissioner). He has been very instrumental in introducing Ethiopian historical sights and artifacts as well as cultural riches and has been successful in drawing the attention of the worldwide tourism industry towards Ethiopia. He was the key person that made UNESCO (United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization) recognize Ethiopian historical and cultural assets.
For his outstanding and irreplaceable role in Ethiopian tourism, the honorable Ato Habteselassie Taffese has been recognized and awarded by many governmental and none governmental organizations.
Ato Habteselassie Taffese passed away peacefully in Balcha Hospital in Addis Ababa today Wednesday Nehase 3, 2009 Ethiopian Calender (August 9, 2017).
