A local university professor has been labeled a terrorist. He was sentenced to death in his native country of Ethiopia. But he believes the whole thing is a sham.
Bucknell University Economics Professor Benharu Nega doesn’t look like a man facing a death sentence.
Nega noted, “The whole judicial system in Ethiopia is a show. There is no judicial system in the proper sense of the term.”
After studying and teaching in the states, Dr. Nega returned to his native Ethiopia, trying to effect change.
He co-founded the Coalition for Unity and Democracy, and was elected mayor of the capital city of Addis Ababa.
He says even after the ruling party refused to hand over power, he still tried to compromise for the future.
Nega explained, “We ask the government to negotiate on key issues of democratization, issues such as independence of the media, independence of the judiciary, which was completely in the hands of the government.”
Dr. Nega says his offers were refused. Protests ensued, with hundreds of citizens killed, and thousands jailed, including Nega and many of his supporters.
After 21 months, pressure from the West led to Nega’s pardon. But he says the West is being played for a fool.
Nega said, “It’s a very clever government in the sense that it sees what sells in the West and what it has done is it has presented itself as one of the bulwarks of the fight against terrorism.”
Nega says the Ethiopian government’s terrorism stance is simply a veil for the brutal genocide and human rights violations happening there.
In fact, Nega’s death sentence was imposed on the premise that he is a terrorist, according to government officials.
Dr. Nega believes the Ethiopian people’s fight for democracy will eventually be a success. However he says it could happen faster with more assistance from the West.
Nega added, “Our argument is you can never have a solid, durable ally with a government that you don’t share a value with.”
“I really strongly believe that the fundamental value and decency of Americans comes from this yearning and appreciation for freedom. And I really believe that the average American would like this to be something that is shared all over the world,” he concluded.
Dr. Nega says he won’t return to Ethiopia so long as the current regime remains in power.

The only difference is the world heard about your death sentence but no one heard our death sentence—the millions in open prison in Ethiopia. The tragedy is that even those on whom death verdict is passed dose not seem to understand they are all on death row. It is becoming a shame to call ourselves humans. Shame on all of us for not doing what a man and people will conscious do.

Dr. Nega should have stayed on the topic of terrorism a bit more because it is probably the most important issue here. The so called “Ethiopian Government” is now deeply involved in the habit of calling anybody who threatens its illegitimate existence a “Terrorist.” Now one should wonder if this kind of shenanigan helps the over all fight against terrorists.
We, as well as I am sure most of the West, knows that TPLF is probably is detested by a majority of Ethiopians. Also we know Ethiopians have never been involved in terrorist activities before and will not be involved in the future. However, when the government makes the opposition a terrorist, this can push the majority of the people who detest TPLF to be terrorist sympathizers. Is this fair? I find this to be terribly irresponsible. The West should tell TPLF (minority junta that passes itself for a government) to cease and desist from calling the majority of Ethiopians who oppose it a “terrorist.”
His best qualiy is he deeply understands and can implement delmocracy in that democracy deficient country! He is honest,unity minded, and above all smarter than any intelegent Ethiopian!

While your frustration is totally understandable, you should take the rout of “non violence” as the country does not afford to go through another cycle of blood shed. Dr. M. Luther King did it so does Mahatma Ghandi! It’s a waste of resource most importantly, you must be mindful of the lives that would perish in the process- which I believe, would take you no where.
Present day Ethiopia is one huge minimum security prison. Its citizens can move around as they please provided that don’t stray too much. Those who do are swiftly moved to the maximum security section of the prison.Those who challenge the system are routinely sentenced to death. The death sentence is a tool used by the Zenawi regime to force dissidents and human rights activists into exile. No one should be forced to live away from his family and people just because he/she chooses to engage in the governance process.
Luckily Dr Berhanu was out of the country when the death sentence was handed out by Zenawi’s kangaroo court. Other opposition leaders such as ato Melaku Tefera were in court when the sentence was handed and they could very well be executed. Ms. Mideksa is still languishing in jail on tramped up charges.
Let us not forget all the other political prisoners in Ethiopia.

Terrorism is also used as a means to an ends in the west. Don’t be fooled by the west, it is barely possible that they are taken as fools!
