The Cultural Side of ESFNA Shines

The  25th Silver Jubilee of the Ethiopian Sports Federation in North America (ESFNA) has been special not only because it was the 25th anniversary, but because politeness, humbleness, and respect comprised the manner of the week while everyone in attendance was very happy to be among fellow countrymen and have a good time.

This event was especially greatly enjoyed by young Ethiopians who are growing up in North America and attended the event for the first time. It has planted a burning sense of nationalism as well as pride about who we are.

For parents who have been telling their kids how Ethiopians are good and that Ethiopian culture is special, it was a great opportunity to prove what they are talking about.

In short, it was a source of comfort for many attendees to be among so many fellow Ethiopians.

It also gave a great opportunity for people who produce good products to get to know each other, as well as to sell or introduce their work and services to wider audiences.

To name a few, there were the young man who produced a movie called The Man of Millennium (Tikher Tefera ). Temesgen the Begna and Kirar player who has produced four CD’s, and Tsehay that publishes many books on Ethiopia. There was a nice authentic Ethiopian portrait design by Bernose.org.

On the non-profit side, many who are dedicated to their cause had an opportunity to present their projects to the public and attract like minded people, as well as create a network with those who might be interested in their cause. In light of many negative news reports out of Ethiopia, and the polarizing political climate, the event provided a source of comfort, a display of nationalist feeling and a sense of togetherness.

The federation has come a long way to get where it is today. It is very difficult to list who did what. It only can be said the hard work and dedication of those who are involved has paid off by making ESFNA the longest functioning Ethiopian organization and still growing.

It is important to note that what keeps this organization going is its founding principles, which all of us like. These principles make it a non-political, inclusive, sports and cultural organization.

As in every year, this year’s event was not without controversy. The two big issues were whether the Sunshine Construction Company should receive as much  exposure that it got, and if it was appropriate for the federation to accept a $300,000 donation. Particularly, the acceptance of this donation was in question because of the influence it might have on the founding principles of ESFNA.
Although it is not the first time ESFNA has accepted a donation from the same source, times and circumstances have changed. Some felt it is wise for ESFNA to show financial success and be independent from any controversy that might arise.

Where do we go from here?

For the children of Ethiopia, events of the past 40 years and experimentation with alien ideology has brought only misery and divisiveness. While those who carried on this experimentation are getting older, the younger generation is seeking to try something different.

ESFNA’s silver anniversary shined because it was fueled by its participants’ strength and character, indicative of the richness of Ethiopian culture. It also showed what    Ethiopians value individually and collectively. That is why this event was attended by a record number of young Ethiopians. One of them told me that nationalism and togetherness is the way to go for the young people.

Along with other Ethiopians, the author of this article believes that ESFNA can be a model of what Ethiopia should be. ESFNA is a beacon to the Ethiopia’s politicians and leaders that the answer to the needs of Ethiopia is not found in alien ideologies and other cultures, but in each of us as we work together for the common good.

It appears that ESFNA will shine brighter as its quality leadership creates new, strong leaders and raises up fresh torch bearers. For next year, it would be a good idea to honor  those who have served 25 years in the federation.

In light of the fact the 25th anniversary of ESFNA was a huge success, I strongly urge that the next event would also be held in RFK stadium in Washington, DC. Businesses who have benefited from this past event, should be encouraged to contribute enough money help defray expenses.

Having it in DC would help to correct minor mistakes, make it truly a peoples’  event forever, and help ESFNA continue to be not only a shining model for Ethiopians, but an opportunity for revitalization.
